Last-Minute October Half-Term Holidays: 5 Family Adventures Off the Beaten Track

The conkers are down, the evenings are drawing in and half-term is nearly here. If you haven’t booked anything yet, don’t panic. We’ve still got places on five of our favourite small-group experiences, and late October happens to be one of the best times of year to do any of them.

Every trip below comes in two lengths: a full week-long adventure, or a shorter “mini” version if you’re short on days or would rather have a few quieter days at home before school starts again.

Why October half-term is the perfect time for a family adventure

Learning without the classroom: the World Schooling approach

“World Schooling” is the idea that the world itself can be a classroom. Families who follow it believe children learn some of their most important lessons by seeing and doing things for themselves rather than reading about them. You don’t have to take your children out of school to get the benefit, though. One well-chosen half-term trip can teach them more than a whole term of worksheets.

Here’s what an off-the-beaten-track family holiday can give them:

  • Geography they can feel. Desert dunes, glacial rivers, volcanic valleys and fjord-like bays stop being pictures in a textbook.
  • History that comes alive. They can walk through a UNESCO-listed kasbah, cross a rebuilt Ottoman bridge or explore a real Transylvanian castle.
  • Cultural confidence. Sharing a meal with a Berber family or saying “hvala” to a Bosnian shopkeeper helps children feel comfortable with people whose lives look different from theirs.
  • Wildlife and the natural world. Watching a wild brown bear is something they’ll remember long after they’ve forgotten the half-term telly.
  • Resilience and curiosity. New food, new languages and new landscapes help children become adaptable, confident travellers.

Our groups are small (no more than eight travellers), so children never feel lost in a crowd, and the local guides have time to answer their endless questions.

1. The 7-Night Sahara Desert Experience & 4-Night Mini Sahara Desert Experience

Morocco | Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara

Start in the colourful, noisy souks of Marrakech. Then head over the wild High Atlas Mountains, past Berber villages, to the golden dunes of the Sahara. On the way you’ll visit Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most famous kasbahs, and the towering walls of the Todra Gorge. The highlight is a camel trek into the dunes at sunset, followed by a night in a Berber desert camp with dinner under a sky full of stars.

The 7-night Sahara Desert Experience gives you time to unwind at the end, with a stay in the peaceful Ourika Valley, where you can relax by the pool with a mint tea. The 4-night Mini Sahara Desert Experience keeps all the desert magic and fits it into a shorter break.

Why visit the Sahara in late October?

  • The heat has eased. Autumn brings warm, sunny days that are far more comfortable for exploring and camel riding than the summer months.
  • Desert nights are crisp and clear, which makes for brilliant stargazing, and there’s nothing like a campfire under the Milky Way to impress the children.
  • It’s only a short flight from the UK, with direct routes to Marrakech from several London airports, so you won’t lose much of the holiday to travelling.
  • Autumn sunshine is guaranteed at a time when Britain is turning grey and damp.

World Schooling moment: children get to see how nomadic Berber communities have lived in one of the harshest landscapes on Earth.

2. The 7-Night Transylvania Experience & 4-Night Brown Bear Experience

Romania | The Carpathian Mountains

Transylvania is where fairy tales and folklore meet real wilderness. The 7-night Transylvania Experience is a week-long escape into simple rural life, with charming Saxon towns, painted villages and forested mountains. The highlight is watching wild brown bears in their natural habitat in the Carpathians.

The 4-night Brown Bear Experience is perfect for families looking for an alternative adventure. It focuses on bear watching in the Carpathian wilderness and also includes the fairytale Peleș Castle and the legendary Bran Castle, better known as “Dracula’s Castle”.

Why visit Transylvania in late October?

  • It’s bear season. Brown bears are busy feeding before they hibernate for the winter, and autumn is a fantastic time to see them.
  • The autumn colours are spectacular. The Carpathian forests turn fiery shades of red, orange and gold.
  • Halloween in Dracula’s homeland! October half-term runs right up to Halloween, and there’s no spookier place to spend it than near Bran Castle, surrounded by centuries of Transylvanian legend.
  • The summer crowds have gone, so the castles and medieval towns are more relaxed.

World Schooling moment: a lesson in conservation. Romania is home to one of Europe’s largest brown bear populations, and seeing them in the wild shows children why protecting their habitat matters.

3. The 7-Night Bosnia & Herzegovina Experience & 4-Night Mini Bosnia Experience

Bosnia & Herzegovina | Sarajevo, Mostar and beyond

Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of Europe’s most underrated destinations, and it’s a favourite of ours. It’s a place where East meets West. Ottoman bazaars sit next to Austro-Hungarian avenues, minarets share the skyline with church spires, and the scenery is breathtaking at every turn.

The 7-night Bosnia & Herzegovina Experience takes you deep into the country’s culture, history and landscapes, including emerald-green rivers, waterfalls and mountain villages. The 4-night Mini Bosnia Experience is a shorter introduction to its highlights, ideal if your half-term is already busy.

Why visit Bosnia & Herzegovina in late October?

  • The weather is mild and pleasant, just right for exploring cobbled old towns on foot.
  • Mostar’s famous Old Bridge is yours to enjoy without the summer tour buses.
  • The autumn landscapes are stunning. River valleys and mountainsides glow with autumn colour.
  • It’s harvest season, which means fresh local produce, hearty Bosnian food and plenty of warming comfort dishes.
  • It’s excellent value, so your holiday budget goes further than it would in much of Europe.

World Schooling moment: in Bosnia, children see how different cultures, faiths and empires have shaped a single country.

4. The 7-Night Turkish Balloon & Gulet Experience & 4-Night Hot Air Balloon Experience

Türkiye | Cappadocia and the Turquoise Coast

This one is all about the “wow” moments. In Cappadocia you’ll wander through a surreal landscape of “fairy chimneys”, cave houses and underground cities carved into volcanic rock. If you choose to, you can take to the skies at sunrise in a hot air balloon, drifting over it all with dozens of other balloons.

The 7-night Turkish Balloon & Gulet Experience pairs a magical balloon flight over Cappadocia with a cruise along the Turkish coast on a traditional wooden gulet, with swimming stops in secluded turquoise coves. The 4-night Hot Air Balloon Experience focuses on the magic of Cappadocia.

Why visit Türkiye in late October?

  • Autumn is a great time for ballooning. Calmer, cooler mornings often mean good flying conditions over Cappadocia (flights always depend on the weather on the day).
  • The Mediterranean is still warm enough for a swim after the summer, which makes late October a lovely time for a gulet cruise.
  • Walking is comfortable among the valleys and rock formations, without the scorching heat of summer.
  • Autumn sunshine is almost guaranteed, so you can stretch the summer out a little longer.

World Schooling moment: the underground cities of Cappadocia and the cave homes carved into the rock are a lesson in human ingenuity. Children can find out how whole communities once lived below ground.

5. The 7-Night Montenegro Experience & 5-Night Mini Montenegro Experience

Montenegro | The Bay of Kotor and the mountains

Montenegro packs a huge amount into a very small country: dramatic mountains, medieval walled towns, national parks and the dazzling Bay of Kotor, which is often called one of the most beautiful bays in the world.

The 7-night Montenegro Experience gives you time to explore both the coast and the rugged interior. The 5-night Mini Montenegro Experience is a shorter trip that still gives you a proper taste of this Balkan gem.

Why visit Montenegro in late October?

  • The sea is still pleasant, and the days are often mild and sunny on the coast.
  • Kotor is far calmer once the summer crowds and cruise ships have thinned out, so you can explore the old town’s winding lanes at your own pace.
  • Autumn is ideal for hiking. Cooler temperatures make the famous climb up to Kotor’s fortress walls much more comfortable, and the views over the bay are stunning.
  • The mountains glow with autumn colour, and village life is at its most authentic away from the peak season.

World Schooling moment: Kotor’s Venetian walls and fortresses tell the story of trade, empires and defence across the Adriatic, and the history lesson comes with a view.
