Our Best Long Haul Destinations over Winter

Winter does not have to mean grey skies and early nights. Some of the best long haul destinations are at their brightest right now. If you want warmth, colour and big landscapes, this countdown will help you choose.
Therefore, we have ranked five of our favourite epic journeys for winter. First, we explain why each one works at this time of year. Then we show what you can do there. Finally, we point you to the trip so you can see the full itinerary.
5. Argentina: One of the Best Long Haul Destinations for Summer

Our countdown starts in the southern hemisphere. When it is winter in London, it is summer in Argentina. As a result, you get long days and warm weather across much of the country.

On our Argentina trip, you explore Buenos Aires, trek on Perito Moreno Glacier and visit the lakes around Bariloche. In addition, you taste Malbec among the vineyards of Mendoza. It runs for 14 nights, and flights between the regions are included.
4. Costa Rica: Dry Season Sun and Wildlife

Costa Rica comes next. Its dry season runs through the winter months, so skies are often clear and the days are warm. Moreover, the volcanoes, cloud forests and beaches are all within easy reach.

Our Costa Rica trip lasts nine nights. It takes in turtle-filled waterways, volcano views and sun-soaked coastline. Consequently, it is a lovely mix of adventure and relaxation.
3. Colombia: One of the Best Long Haul Destinations for Variety

Colombia surprises almost everyone. Winter brings the drier months across much of the country. Therefore, it is a smart time to see the coffee region and the Caribbean coast.

Our 14-night Colombia trip runs from the Amazon through the coffee country to the Caribbean. For a taste of the Amazon, read about Calanoa Lodge.
2. Guatemala: Best Long Haul Destinations for Culture and Volcanoes

Guatemala is a joy in winter. The dry season runs from November to April, so conditions are good for volcano hikes and jungle temples. In fact, it is one of the best long haul destinations for culture.

Our Guatemala trip lasts seven nights. You wander through Antigua, hike Pacaya volcano, cross Lake Atitlán and climb the temples of Tikal. Better still, there is a departure in January 2027.
1. South Africa: Our Number One Winter Escape

Our winner is South Africa. Summer arrives in December, so Cape Town is sunny and lively. Meanwhile, the coast and winelands are at their best.

Our South Africa trip runs for 14 nights, and it mixes cities, scenery and wildlife. Alternatively, a shorter Western Cape safari runs in November and December. Either way, you swap winter gloom for big skies.
