European Destinations to Avoid in the Summer

Summer is the perfect time to explore new destinations and create unforgettable memories. However, some European destinations may not be ideal during the peak summer season. From overcrowding to scorching temperatures, here are the worst five European destinations to consider avoiding when planning your next summer adventure!

Barcelona, Spain

Famous street La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain. Thousands of people walk daily by this popular pedestrian area 1.2 kilometer long.

Undeniably a beautiful city, but it can become overwhelmingly crowded during the summer months. The long queues at popular attractions, crowded beaches, and restaurants make it challenging to fully enjoy the city’s charm. They estimate over 3 million people visited Barcelona last summer which is actually 15% down on 2019! Definitely worth considering visiting Barcelona during the shoulder seasons to experience its true essence without the swarming tourist crowds.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The picturesque old town and stunning coastal views attract hordes of tourists in peak summer. The narrow streets become congested, and the famous city walls are filled with people. The scorching heat can also make exploring the city uncomfortable. They estimate just under 1 million people visited Dubrovnik last year, rapidly approaching the whooping 1.4 million pre-pandemic figures of 2019. When you consider the size of Dubrovnik, in particular, the old town, it’s definitely worth planning your visit to Dubrovnik in spring or autumn when the weather is milder and the crowds are thinner. Also if you can avoid the travelling at the same time as the big cruise ships.

Florence, Italy

Florence is a treasure trove of art and history, but it can be overwhelming during peak summer. The long queues to visit famous museums like the Uffizi Gallery and the sweltering heat can dampen your experience. It’s estimated 10-16 million people on average visit Florence but in 2018 it was a jaw-dropping 27.7 million. So we’d highly recommend avoiding Florence in peak summer, not just for the crowds but the stifling heat! Any other time of year if a better time for you to immerse yourself in the city’s rich culture.

Santorini, Greece

The destination we expected to see on this list! Santorini’s iconic white-washed buildings and breathtaking sunsets make it a dream destination. However, during peak summer, this small island gets flooded with tourists, making it difficult to find a peaceful spot. The steep prices, crowded streets, and fully booked accommodations can take away from the island’s tranquility. The island receives over 2 million visitors annually! This is a definite must avoid for the summer months and whenever you go it’s best to try and avoid visiting when a cruise ship is there and the crowds balloon further.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Perhaps a surprise inclusion on this list. Amsterdam is a vibrant city known for its picturesque canals and cultural heritage. However, during peak summer, the city becomes inundated with tourists, especially around popular attractions like the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. However, it receives just under 15 million visitors annually which makes navigating through the crowded streets and long queues can be frustrating. It’s an all year round destination so if you can we highly recommend you avoid the peak summer months.

While these European destinations offer incredible experiences, visiting them during peak summer may not be the best idea. The overcrowding, scorching temperatures, and inflated prices can detract from the overall experience. We always recommend planning your trip during the shoulder seasons to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed and authentic holiday. Remember, the key to a memorable trip is finding the right balance between popular destinations and quieter times of the year.

If you do have to travel in the summer months then why not look at somewhere more off the beaten track and save the most popular destinations for another time of year! For inspiration, why not have a look through these less travelled destinations.
