Food and Drink in Bucharest

If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you’ll know that we are in love with the city of Bucharest. Unlike any other city in Europe, its unique combination of old and new world architecture and attitudes makes it a mixing pot of styles, cultures and influences. Thankfully, this bleeds through (not literally) to the cuisine and allows the local chefs and restaurant and bar owners to be adventurous with their menus. We’d thoroughly recommend that you spend some time in the city, to take in the atmosphere, experience the culture and, most importantly, feast upon the fantastic selection of food and drink on offer. Check out our list below of some of our favourite food and drink spots in the city.

Caru’ cu Bere

Translating as The Beer Wagon, Caru’ cu Bere certainly lives up to its name as the beers start flowing as soon as you step through the door! The restaurant is constantly buzzing, with locals and visitors alike filled with anticipation of the evening about to unfold. Although service can sometimes be slow, this will not detract from the experience as you can spend your time admiring the mosaic floors, painted ceilings and amazing decoration. From Friday to Sunday, expect to be serenaded by a folk song and dance ensemble as they play traditional Romanian songs, although touristy, this is also charming. We’d definitely suggest reserving a table as it can get pretty busy, but you won’t regret it!

Energiea

At the other end of the spectrum lies Energiea, a funky, modern gastropub that offers superb food such as their ribs or burgers. Also on offer are slightly healthier options of soup and salads, both of which are fresh and tasty! The rich variety of drinks means that this isn’t somewhere you’ll want to eat at and leave, as they offer a fine selection of fruity beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is fun and friendly, this is definitely one to be on your list.

Located in the Old Town of Bucharest, Joben Bistro offers an experience like no other. Its distinct design, inspired by the theme of vintage steampunk, will transport you to another world. Mechanical gadgets and gizmos can be seen across the restaurant and bar while the bartenders mix delicious and inventive cocktails. The menu offers simple but tasty pub food with a nice selection of sharing platters and hearty burgers – a great place to spend the evening socialising with friends or fellow travellers.

Linea / Closer To The Moon

After you’ve been out for the evening, there are few betters places to relax and unwind than Linea. For the colder months, the rooftop is adorned with a selection of transparent igloo structures designed to keep their visitors warm and cosy while still enjoying drinking and relaxing outside. After finishing your meal, Nomad is the ideal place to hang out, with a fantastic selection of alcoholic beverages and delightful cocktail menu; along with a fairly extensive list of whiskies too! Origo

More designed as a ‘morning after the night before’ type place that serves beautifully fresh coffee made by experienced and enthusiastic baristas. The majority of their menus are based on the drinks they serve, with a few sharing platters thrown in for a lunchtime snack with friends. Into the evening the coffee is replaced by cocktails with the versatile bartenders mixing up all manner of treats. The aesthetic of the bar is clean, warm and inviting, so make sure you pay them a visit!

Opening times vary, typically opening at 7:30am or 9:00am and closing at 1:00am or 2:00am.
