Welcome to amazing Montenegro. Enjoy the visits to three national parks, two crystal clear rivers, UNESCO protected bay, breathtaking mountains and lakes – all of that and much more in one of the smallest countries in Europe.

A scenic drive from the capital will take you across the national park of Skadar lake, along the coastline, passing by iconic Sveti Stefan island to Kotor – one of the very few areas on Earth protected by UNESCO both for the stunning scenery and cultural heritage. You don’t want to miss the chance to see the view from the ancient fortress, and also to visit Perast islands – one of them man-made so that a beautiful church could be built on it. If you want a bit more of adrenaline, speedboat trips, paragliding and hiking can be arranged too.

After a few days of enjoying Kotor and its surroundings, the next day is packed with history lessons about the greatest Montenegrian ever and a monastery that was the first line of defence of Montenegro for five centuries, and still stands tall. This is, of course, combined with amazing views along the way, though you’re going through ”only” one national park. A unique honey farm experience follows, and if you have a sweet tooth, you’re in the right place.  Afterwards, you’re transferred to 1700 meters for a shepherd’s style dinner and accommodation in an eco-village which, needless to say, has a postcard view wherever you look – including the sky.

Next, you’ll be travelling along the stunning Tara canyon visiting another beautiful monastery and the amazing Tara bridge. For the brave ones there is a zip line to go to the other side, though just walking on this incredible feat of engineering is amazing enough. The next stop is the highlight of the day, the Black Lake. The name says it’s black, but depending on the weather it changes colours, ever so beautiful. You can have an easy stroll around it or hike up the mountain to see it from a bird’s perspective on the way to another lake. You might be tempted to fall asleep during the last transfer, but Trsa road is well worth staying awake – if we got a nickel every time someone said it is the most beautiful road they ever saw… Let’s just say we’d be very rich.

The last two nights you will spend at an ethno village, on the bank of yet another canyon, enjoying delicious food, engaging in outdoor activities such as white water rafting, lake cruises, horse riding and hiking, or simply resting with a good book – not too many places are better than Rudinice.

The following day we guarantee you’ll be sad you’re leaving, but we’ll be happy to welcome you again.

The Country

Magical Montenegro. The Black Mountain.

Home to one of Europe’s most enticing stretches of coastline, some of the most striking mountain scenery on the continent and countless other spectacular gems, Montenegro is a country of incredible beauty and diversity. Not even 300km long, this tiny country packs in an extraordinary range of diverse landscape, cultural influences and must-see destinations.

Catholic West meets Orthodox East, Montenegro’s heritage fuses centuries old influences ranging from the Ottoman to the Venetian eras with a smorgasbord of diverse architecture and culture to create an utterly evocative holiday adventure.

Montenegro’s marvellous coastline is blessed with warm sunshine, olive groves, and citrus trees, sprinkled with clusters of historic towns boasting picture-perfect Venetian and Baroque churches and palaces and decorated with handfuls of quaint white-stoned fishing villages complete with secluded pebble coves and fine sandy beaches. Wander inland, and you’re greeted with breathtaking canyons, gushing emerald-green rivers, astonishing snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes and rich forests, sprinkled here and there with traditional mountain towns and gorgeous monasteries bursting with vivid frescoes and magical icons.

Small but mighty, Montenegro can be divided into three distinct areas, each with its own diverse qualities: The central region made up of the capital city and other inland towns, the mountainous north with its impressive natural scenery, and the coast which includes a number of stunning seaside towns.

One of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Mediterranean, Kotor is also one of the most beautiful. Sweet churches adorn quaint squares that are scattered with lovely little cafes shaded by soft white umbrellas. Get lost around the secluded alleys and narrow streets that wind through the Old Town and absorb the history rich within the walls of the Venetian-Gothic architecture.

The last decade has seen much of Kotor transform, with derelict buildings reformed to their original splendour, housing boutique hotels, renovated apartments, shops, stylish restaurants and much more. The hustle and bustle of the day with tourists filling the streets is forgotten by night and the evenings are magical. Bars and restaurants come to life, whether it’s a quiet corner restaurant or a lively bar, there is something for everyone.

Wander round and get lost in the maze of alleyways, browsing the boutique shops and admiring the architecture, stopping for a glass of wine or cocktail before dinner in the evening. During the day, take the walk up to the fortress and enjoy some spectacular aerial views of the city, wander around the old town admiring the 17th century clocktower, the Rector’s Palace and the Old Town Hall or simply bathe in the golden glow of the sunshine on a wicker chair at one of the Old Town’s delightful cafes.

However you choose to spend your time, you can’t fail to be enchanted by Kotor’s elegance and beauty.

Pitched 960m above sea level, the mountain town of Kolasin is surrounded by snow capped mountain peaks, gushing glacial rivers and clean, fresh air. It has some unusual features including what looks like a disused car park in the centre of the main square and some rather ugly buildings, but it feels like a proper mountain town and is packed with people in the winter who come for skiing.

With the virgin forests of Biogradska National Park and its rich flora and fauna on the doorstep, Kolasin makes the ideal base to enjoy the outdoors, embrace nature and live well. There are hiking jaunts aplenty as well as rafting, fishing and skiing during the winter so you’ll never find yourself at a loose end. The town’s proximity to the breathtaking Moraca Valley and its medieval monastery makes it all the more appealing.

Several kilometers to the south of Pluzine lies the delightful Piva Monastery, which boasts a collection of stunning frescoes dating back to the 17th century. Within the Dormition of the Mother of God Church lies a splendid collection of wall paintings and some beautiful furnishings.

The Season

The Montenegro Experience runs from May to October.

The climate varies between the coast and the mountains. Along the Adriatic, coastal Montenegro enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate with very warm summers and mild winters. The interior of the country however including the mountains has a sub-alpine climate with warm summers but bitterly cold winters sometimes dipping to as low as minus 15 degrees! The mountains are best visited all the way from April until September when the temperatures are just right for indulging in outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and rafting. See below for more information.

May: The air is fresh and clean and the skies are blue and sunny and the wildflowers are out in full force! The only drawback in travelling to Montenegro in springtime is the limitation on outdoor activities such as rafting, which only kicks off towards the end of May. The coast usually enjoys sunny weather in May with clear skies and fresh air.

June, July & August: Summer is high season for tourists but only on the coast where the weather is hot and sunny. The interior of the country with its mountains, lakes and national parks is absolutely beautiful at this time of year.

September & October: A lovely time to visit Montenegro. It can get a little chilly but the weather normally behaves itself and most visitors have left by now leaving you to enjoy the mountains in peace. The later on in the season and depending on when winter sets in each year, there may be some areas that are inaccessible. Beautiful weather on the coast especially in September and no hoards of tourists to contend with!

The Duration & The Calendar

The Montenegro Experience takes place over seven nights, and typically commences every Sunday during the season. However, the arrival and departure times of your chosen flights may well affect the exact duration of your stay. Many use the flexibility of booking their own flights to add an additional night or two in Kotor at the beginning and/or end of the experience to make the very most of their time in Montenegro.

Those looking for a shorter break might find the Mini Montenegro Experience which takes place over four nights more appropriate.

The calendar on the BOOK NOW page shows exactly when trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer. Click here to see available dates and rates on our calendar.

The Highlights

There are hundreds of reasons why we think you would be mad not to miss this experience, but here are a few of our personal trip highlights to help persuade you…

Superb coastline: Blessed with blue skies, golden sunshine and stunningly beautiful stretches of coastline that extend from the tip of Croatia right down to the border with Albania, Southern Montenegro represents some of the most exquisite seaside scenery in the Adriatic. Set against an impressive backdrop of steep, vast mountains and rolling green hills, the clusters of quaint coastal towns boast rich historical and architectural treasures that hint back to civilisations past with their Venetian churches and Byzantine style buildings. Cool off in crystal-clear azure waters and stroll through the stone streets and picturesque squares of the coast’s medieval towns. Whatever you choose to do, you can’t fail to be blown away by the incredible beauty of the south.

The Mountains: The north of Montenegro enjoys magnificent displays of natural beauty with every twist and turn that will leave you breathless. Vast, rugged mountains loom high above the turquoise waters of glacial lakes that wind their way through immense canyons and past snow capped peaks, fortifying lush valleys and rich forests along the way. Aside from the outstanding panoramas, the north offers so much more. Explore hidden mountain lakes and small rural villages, climb colossal mountains and rugged peaks or simply sit back and absorb your surroundings. Nature at its finest.

Outdoor activities: With its collection of mighty mountains, gorgeous lakes and extensive coastline, Montenegro is a county thriving with outdoor activities. The National Parks provide a wealth of active pursuits that make the very most of their breathtaking surroundings and cool, fresh air, including opportunities for hiking, walking and general exploring. We have a selection of ‘on-foot’ experiences that range in location and intensity. If you’re feeling up to a challenge, choose a high power hike around the incredible Durmitor Park or get involved in the exhiliration of white water rafting. Whatever your preference, there are adventures aplenty to get you out and about, enjoying the country, the fresh air and nature at its best.
