Venture up north beyond the Arctic Circle for the chance of witnessing the bright Northern Lights up close. This four-night adventure will take you to the small island of Svalbard where, if the odds are in your favour, you can marvel at the majestic Aurora Borealis, experience the thrill of dog-sledding and listen to the locals’ stories of the times past, all of this while being surrounded by sheer darkness.

The journey will begin in the small town of Longyearbyen on Svalbard, which will await with heaps of glittering snow against a black backdrop – we dare you not to fall in love with it!  In the evening, dinner is served in a traditional Trapper’s Cabin. Stay up exchanging stories of the old hunting days while keeping an eye out for the Northern Lights. And with Svalbard’s location well above the Arctic Circle, the chances of spotting them are higher than in any other place.

The next day you will befriend the dogs who will eagerly take you on a sledding trip around the wilderness of Svalbard. With nothing around, but pure silence and hopefully a dancing aurora up in the sky, nothing else will matter in this magical setting. Next, enjoy the great outdoors with a snowshoeing trip around the valleys near Longyearbyen. Being out and away from the city lights, paired with just a little bit of luck, will give you the perfect opportunity to spot the mesmerizing Northern Lights, while also enjoying the dark, sleepy silence.

The Experience

Day 1: Arrival in Longyearbyen. Once there, you will be transferred to your hotel. You will have a couple of hours to explore the small town before it’s time to go to the Trappers’ Station. Enjoy a candelight dinner and the locals’ stories while waiting up for the Northern Lights. Shared accommodation in the basic Trappers’ Station.

Day 2: After breakfast, you will be meeting the dogs and harnessing them for a dogsledding trip around Bolter Valley. Away from the town and with less light pollution, the chances of spotting the Northern Lights are very high. You will return back to Longyearbyen and Basecamp Hotel for the evening.

Day 3: Spend your day hiking up the glaciers around Longyearbyen. The route will be determined based on weather, but being out and about will offer the perfect conditions of spotting the Northern Lights. The trip will hopefully culminate with a hot drink under the mesmerizing sky.

Day 4: Morning at your leisure in Longyearbyen before being transferred to the airport for the flight back to Oslo, and then onwards back home.

The Country

Shrouded in complete darkness for three months a year, the island of Svalbard is one of the northernmost inhabited areas, making it the perfect spot for catching the Northern Lights. Well above the arctic circle, its biggest and only permanently inhabited island, Spitsbergen, represents the border of civilisation – think glaciers, fjords and mountains and nothing but pure wilderness for miles and miles. It is the place to be in if you want to have a good chance at spotting an aurora.

While the island witnesses an unique, yet fragile ecosystem consisting of arctic flora and fauna (numerous species of marine life and birds, polar bears and reindeer), widely protected through its six national parks, all fades during the polar night when the Aurora Borealis comes into view. From vast unspoiled, uninhibited areas, and should you be lucky enough, you will spot the Northern Lights display their full splendor. An experience forever etched in your mind.

While not part of the experience, you will most likely stop in this little capital before venturing beyond the Arctic Circle. Oslo will pleasantly surprise you. Combining the bustle and hustle of modern life with a pinch of culture and vast green areas, Oslo surely has the recipe for success.

Located just at the mouth of its eponymous fjord, the city is surrounded by forests and hills, lakes and little islands. It’s no wonder it has been named one of the greenest cities in the world. At its core lies a modern, yet chic center, dominated by 19th century architecture. With most of its sights gathered together and accessible by foot, getting around is as easy as saying its name. And if you do have a bit more time, we recommend venturing out to the Bygdøy Peninsula for a visit to the delightful Outdoor Folk Museum.

Accommodation in Oslo:

Includes Park Inn by Radisson Oslo Airport

Includes Gardermoen Airport Hotel

Includes Citybox Oslo

Includes Saga Poshtel Oslo Central

Includes Forenom Aparthotel Oslo City

Please Note: The above are accommodation suggestions close to the Oslo Airport or Central Train Station, with there being many choices of the same level. The accommodation in Oslo is not part of the trip, and will have to be booked independently.

There is no other place you’d like to find yourself in during the Polar Night. With a population of a little over 2,000 people, Longyearbyen is the largest town of Svalbard. Located in the heart of Spitsbergen, it is the perfect place to set base on your quest for the Northern Lights.

But it is so much more than that. With little snow-dusted streets, colorful houses contrasting with the darkness around and a sleepy quietness about it, there is every guarantee that you will fall in love with this place.

At its roots a mining town, Longyearbyen (along with the rest of Svalbard) has grown into a touristic and research center as well. That, paired with being an economic free zone, has attracted people from all walks of life, giving this little village-like settlement a distinctive charm. Head over to one of the pubs or restaurants where everybody gathers after hours and exchange stories of the old days, new days and adventures. Here, the locals and travellers get along well.

Accommodation in Svalbard:

Includes Basecamp Hotel

Includes Trappers’ Station*

Please Note: Accommodation will be allocated by Untravelled Paths subject to availability. In the event there is no availability we will use alternative accommodation of similar standard and quality.

*The Trappers’ Station accommodation is shared and basic, offering an authentic experience and an insight as to how the old trappers used to live. There is no running water or showers at the station, but the outdoor toilet is heated for your comfort. With a very weak mobile signal you really feel like you are out in the wilderness, even though you are only 15 minutes’ drive from the city. There is the alternative of being transferred back to the Basecamp Hotel after dinner.

The Season

The Northern Lights season goes from November all the way through January where the island experiences the Polar Night, giving optimal conditions for spotting the Aurora Borealis.

The difference between specific months is mainly related to temperature, the finer details of which are outlined below.

November: With the last rays of the sun disappearing below the horizon by the end of October, November finds itself in complete darkness. When the skies are clear, the stars and moon are complemented by shows of dancing Northern Lights.

December: With no sun in sight, December is also a prime month for a chance to witness the Northern Lights. There is also the added bonus of the festive atmosphere, especially in Oslo where the Christmas markets are adding a little bit more charm.

January: January is colder than the other months, with the average temperature around -13 degrees Celsius. Still dark, the Northern Lights can be spotted throughout January as well if the weather conditions are optimal. Towards the end of the month, pinkish hues find themselves up in the sky, before the Sun finally peaks from behind the mountains in February.

The Duration & The Calendar

The Highlights

There are hundreds of reasons why we think you would be mad to miss out on the Northern Lights Experience in Svalbard but here are a few of our personal trip highlights to help persuade you…

The Lights: The Northern Lights make the bucket list for many people, and rightfully so. The result of the solar winds sending charged particles into our upper atmosphere, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are prevalent in the high altitudes, appearing as dancing curtains over the pitch-black skies. It is truly a moment of wonder when they tip-toe shyly onto the sky before blowing into a true show of color, growing, dancing and twisting and making the world stop for a moment. Breathtaking doesn’t begin to cover it.

The Polar Night: As the sun sets for the last time for the next few months, Svalbard is left in complete darkness. Flying into Longyearbyen for your adventure, the light will gradually disappear leaving just a thin streak on the horizon, which will eventually fade away as you begin your descent. The novelty of the perpetual night is as exciting as it is tranquil. There is a peaceful quiet coming with it as people go about their… night. But it’s not all dark and gloom. As you step outside into the wilderness away from the artificial lights, you will be welcome by a starry sky and moon, and if the odds are in your favour, a majestic aurora.

The Outdoors: In hunting for the Lights, you will spend as much time as possible out in the wilderness. This is a time for self-reflection as you are surrounded by nothing but pristine snow and silence. Whether you will be venturing on a glacier hike with your professional guide or dog-sledding, you will love every moment of it.

Dogsledding: And what would a trip to Svalbard be without dog-sledding? Following the night at the Trapper’s Cabin, which is also home to over 100 dogs, you will get close and personal to these friendly furry fellows who will be eager to take you on a sledding adventure. You’ll get to know your team, help harness them, and off you go across the white plains.

The Flights

As a tour operator we are not able to offer inclusive flights as part of our experiences however we are more than happy to help you find the most appropriate incoming and outgoing flights for you. As there are no direct flights from London to Longyearbyen, you will need to fly via Oslo. All the listed airports fly directly in and out of Oslo with multiple different airlines to choose from. We highly recommend using Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights.

Includes London Heathrow                      Includes Edinburgh

Includes London Gatwick                          Includes Manchester

Includes London Stansted                         Includes Dublin

Includes Aberdeen                                       For other airports click here

As far as internal flights go, the two airlines flying into Longyearbyen from Oslo are Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttlewith flights every Monday and Friday.

With the airport being 50 km away from the city and Oslo being a green city, there are great efforts in cutting down carbon dioxide emissions. As such, the difference in cost between private transfers and public transport is substantial, which makes the latter the obvious choice for travelling. Luckily, the train system is modern and easy to use. Below are some options for getting from the airport to Oslo city center:

Includes Flytoget AS (£15-17, every 20 minutes)

Includes Norwegian Railways (£8-£13, every 30 minutes)

For accommodation options either near the airport or close to the central train station, have a look at our WHERE page.
