The Country

Deep in the heart of the Romanian countryside, the Maramures region epitomises the country’s rural heritage and showcases traditional peasant lifestyle beautifully. The Maramures area itself is a scenic masterpiece of natural beauty with remote mountain passes, beautiful valleys and vast expanses of open landscape. Its rolling countryside is a patchwork of green pastures and meadows carpeted with wild flowers, peppered here and there with clusters of wooden churches and small villages like Breb that embrace Romanian peasant lifestyle.

Compact and unique, a visit to Maramures is truly a step back in time through to an age of romantic simplicity and medieval rural values, distinctly preserved in the traditionally run and peasant-inhabited Romanian country villages such as Breb. Ancient skills and crafts such as berry picking, pottery making and buffalo herding continue to thrive and feature at the heart of village life. Locals wear their hand-woven clothing with pride particularly on Sundays when they congregate at their nearest wooden church for long services, and make the most of nature’s bountiful offerings, boiling up their famous jams from local fruits and milking their own cows.

Situated in the heart of legend-ridden Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca (Cluj for short), is the region’s unofficial capital. Whilst not as striking as its Transylvanian counterparts among the likes of medieval Brasov and Sighisoara, the city is infectiously charming in its own right – a cultural metropolis buzzing with the dynamic atmosphere and vibrant energy its student-strong population conjures up.

But don’t be deceived by its youthful character. Cluj’s historical legacy dates back centuries from Roman to Hungarian rule, the traces of which are scattered throughout the city where bohemian bars and lively backstreet cafes sit cheek-by-jowl amongst ancient churches and buildings adorned with an eclectic mix of neo-classical, baroque and gothic architecture. For something truly eccentric, wander down Mirror Street, an exact replica of Paris’s Boulevard Haussmann with identical facades on both sides.

Aside from its zesty atmosphere and prevalent historical roots, the city is also a hothouse for culture and the arts boasting some excellent museums, galleries, theatres and opera houses.

Accommodation in Cluj:

Includes Capitolina Hotel

Includes Hampton Inn Hotel

Please Note: Accommodation will be allocated by Untravelled Paths subject to availability. In the event there is no availability we will use alternative accommodation of similar standard and quality.

The Season

With increasingly long summers and winters, the climate in Maramures, along with the rest of Romania, is rather extreme and plays host to some scorching months as well as a period of severe cold and snow, which is why the Mini Rural Romania Experience does not run through the winter months. Spring, summer and all the way up to early autumn, however, offer beautiful weather with warm sunny days and cool evening along with a wider range of local village activities in Breb that vary slightly according to each season. We have to admit that May and September are our favourite months to spend in Maramures but there are benefits to visiting the area throughout the season. See below for more details.

May & June: The weather in spring and early summer here in Northern Romania is lovely and pleasant as the intense heat of the summer is yet to arrive and the meadows and rolling hills burst to life with colourful wildflowers carpeting the pastures. While May can bring a fair amount of rain, June tends to be drier and warmer with the chance of the odd thunderstorm here and there. In terms of village activities, there are plenty of traditional festivals taking place across the Maramures region in May and June sees the annual brewing of the local firewater in the tiny village of Sarbi near Breb.

July & August: In the full swing of summer, visiting Maramures and Cluj in July and August means long hot sunny days and blue skies with little chance of rain. While temperatures can soar to around 40 degrees, it tends to be a little cooler in the mountains so you’ll be able to enjoy the great outdoors either hiking or simply walking in the mountains. The summer months of July and August also play host to harvest time in rural Romania when the fields and pastures are ripe for hay stacking providing you with the opportunity to get your hands dirty during your time in Breb, helping the locals gather the hay using traditional implements like scythes and forks. Other activities to get involved with during the summer include sherpherding in the fields where you’ll have the opportunity to watch the milking and shearing of the sheep and to sample the local cheeses.

September: September brings with it slightly fresher temperatures and a certain sense of tranquillity as the rush to get the hay in from the fields is usually over by this point. You’ll still have warm and very pleasant days with cooler evenings and visits to the wooden churches and the Merry Cemetery are a lot more enjoyable. September is one of our favourite times to spend in Maramures and Cluj.

The Duration & The Calendar

The Mini Rural Romania Experience in Maramures takes place over four nights and five days and typically commences every Friday during the season. However, the arrival and departure times of your chosen flights to and from Cluj may well affect the exact duration of your stay. The flexibility of booking your own flights however does allow you to add additional nights or two in Cluj at the beginning and/or end of the experience so you can make the most of your time in Maramures and also get a flavour for the extreme contrast between the modern and traditional Romanian lifestyles.

The calendar on the BOOK NOW shows exactly when the Mini Rural Romania Experience trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer. Click here to see available dates and rates on our calendar >

The Highlights

There are hundreds of reasons why we think you would love the opportunity to take a step back in time in Romania’s faraway land of Maramures, but here are a few of our personal trip highlights to help persuade you…

The Way of Life: Famous for its timeless tranquillity, visiting Maramures is akin to taking a journey through time to an area of the world where locals still trade in farm produce like milk and eggs, water is taken from the well and women wear traditional clothing to Sunday service at their local village wooden church. The pace of life in the Maramures region is far slower and more gentle than most of us are used to, which allows the opportunity for self-reflection and a proper break from the hectic lives we all seem to lead nowadays. The village activities available in places like Breb will take you back to another era and make you appreciate and perhaps even mourn the modernity of our developed world. Either way, you’ll get a real slice of rural Romanian life!

The Rural Activities: With such a wonderful range of village activities to get involved with during your time in Maramures, you’ll come away with a wealth of unique experiences to treasure for years to come and may well find yourself mastering a brand new skill. From getting your hands dirty during the harvest time helping the locals with hay stacking and rolling up your sleeves for a culinary workshop learning the art of rustic Romanian cookery in the village of Breb, to sherpherding, or woodcarving, you’ll be immersed in Romanian village life from beginning to end.

The Wooden Churches: Unique to Maramures and iconic the world over, the countryside is peppered with beautiful wooden churches that date all the way back to the 17th and 18th centuries and have made it onto the acclaimed list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Almost each and every tiny village has its own wooden church adorned with dramatic Gothic spires and decorated with stunning interior frescoes. Maramures also boasts the tallest wooden church in the world at Surdesti.
