Enjoy a festive journey through Transylvania and absorb some of Romania’s most picturesque medieval towns and their beautiful winter Christmas markets as well as a visit to the infamous Dracula’s Castle, on a whirlwind adventure spanning just a few days. After one night in the vibrant capital city of Bucharest, guests are whisked away into the heart of rural Romania through the plains of the Transylvanian countryside visiting the decadent Peles Castle on the way. In Brasov, enjoy a leisurely stroll around charming cobbled streets and the Christmas market, stopping to warm up in one of the town’s bohemian cafes dotted along snow-dusted alleyways off the main square. Or choose to unravel history on an informative walking tour taking in the grandeur of the Black Church and even finding the narrowest street in Europe!

Travel through the foothills of the Carpathian mountains to the fairy tale town of Sibiu, which was voted European capital in 2007. Warm up with mulled wine as you enjoy the Christmas market or skate round the ice rink in the central square. Finally, travel back to Bucharest via the spooky corridors of Dracula’s would-be residence, the forbidding Bran Castle.

The Experience

Day 1: Arrival in Bucharest followed by an airport transfer to your boutique accommodation in the Lipscani district and marvel at the Christmas lights of main the boulevard. Once you have checked in you will be greeted with a coffee or glass of wine, before you head out to Bucharest’s buzzing Christmas Market.

Day 2: Morning transfer to Transylvania via Sinaia with a visit to the magnificent Peles Castle before heading on to the medieval town of Brasov just in time for lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Brasov’s charming old town which is famed for its stunning Christmas Tree in the main square.

Day 3: Travel to picture perfect Saxon town of Sibiu, not before stopping for a visit at the legendary Bran Castle, known to many as Dracula’s Castle. In the afternoon, take in Sibiu’s beautiful festive Christmas market and explore the old town.

The Country

Ask most people what comes to mind when they think of Romania and you’re likely to hear something along the lines of Dracula, vampires and gypsies. Yes, the spooky castles pitched on rocky hilltops are certainly vampire-worthy but the only real fangs you’re likely to be exposed to here are those belonging to the wild bears, wolves and lynx that roam the Carpathian Mountains. Once you place the stereotypes aside for a moment, you’ll soon understand how misunderstood, overlooked and vastly underestimated this country is.

From the untouched Transylvanian countryside and the beautiful mountain scenery in the Carpathian Mountains, the wooden churches and painted monasteries of Maramures and the medieval towns of Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara, to the Danube Delta’s abundance of birds and wildlife, and the magnetic buzz of the fast-paced capital of Bucharest, the variation and contrast across Romania is staggering.

Of course, there’s far too much to see in just one visit but here’s what to expect from Transylvania…

Imagine introducing a Communist dictator to Paris for 15 years, add an earthquake for good measure and you’ll end up with something similar to what you have in Bucharest. Fortunately much of Bucharest’s past beauty still remains and you’re likely to find it with every wrong turn you make. It’s a city full of surprises and it’s this contrast that makes it such a fascinating place to explore.

At first glance the city might seem a little run down with remnants of its communist past on full view, however when you look a little closer and scratch beneath the surface it is a city of stunning contrast. In fact, it is the contrast that we love so much about Bucharest, its towering communist blocks sitting right next to the most beautiful buildings showcasing wonderful examples of belle époque architecture.

You’re also likely to notice a few things other things in Bucharest — cars and dogs! Romania’s capital has an abundance of both. The latter being a sad after effect of Nicolae Ceausescu’s programme of systematisation, where he methodically moved families from their houses to purpose built communist blocks and often household pets had to be left behind.  A lot of people seem to be intimidated or put off by Bucharest, but if you can get past preconceptions you might find yourself pleasantly surprised!

All of our Bucharest hotels are based in the old district of Lipscani (pronounced locally as Lip-scan), which is the beating heart of the city and our favourite place to wine and dine in the evenings. There are tons of quaint eateries and buzzing bars, you just need to get yourself lost amongst the historic backstreets or follow our recommendations for the best places to grab a bite or a few drinks.

Nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains and known as the gateway into Transylvania, the medieval Saxon town of Brasov is an absolute gem. A world away from the lively buzz of the capital city, Brasov provides the perfect base for exploring the Transylvanian countryside with its rural villages, fortified churches and thick forests as well as the infamous Bran Castle, would-be residence of mysterious Count Dracula.

Set against a beautiful mountain backdrop and rich in clean fresh air, the pace of life in Brasov’s Old Town is noticeably slower and more relaxed than in Bucharest and is the ideal location for those who prefer to take in the atmosphere at a leisurely pace, ambling around the cobbled streets, stopping for a hot drink in one of the clusters of quaint cafes or heading to a cosy restaurant for lunch or dinner.

The town’s distinctive medieval ambiance is reflected in its striking examples of gothic and baroque architecture, the most prominent of which has to be the Black Church with its smoke-blackened walls and looming presence over the beautiful old square in the heart of the town. All the sights worth seeing in Brasov are accessible by foot including the narrowest street in Europe and the climb up to the top of the Black Tower where the entire city unfolds before your eyes.

Accommodation in Brasov:

Includes Casa Wagner

Includes Bella Muzica

Please Note: Accommodation will be allocated by Untravelled Paths subject to availability. In the event there is no availability we will use alternative accommodation of similar standard and quality.

Set in the heart of the Transylvanian countryside, the beautiful 12th century Saxon town represents one of the most charming areas in Romania. The winding cobbled streets, brightly coloured traditional houses and decorative bridges of the old town come together to create a picturesque chocolate-box town that provides a fairytale-like setting.

As the official European City of Culture (2007), Sibiu boasts the best-preserved architecture in Romania and its three main squares are divine with their charming façades painted in shades of warm apricot, pea green, sky blue and sunshine yellow. The quaint back alleys and stunning church-adorned squares provide the perfect opportunity to soak up the atmosphere pausing for refreshments in a string of wonderful cafés, bars and restaurants dotted in and around the main squares.

Includes Huet Residence

The Season

The Transylvania Christmas Markets experience takes place exclusively during the first part of month of December when the festive decorations and markets are in full swing for the Christmas and New Year Celebrations.

December: The beginning of winter is a good time to visit Transylvania as the crowds will be long gone. The weather can be a bit of a mixed bag depending on the year so you might be greeted with unseasonable sunshine or even some snow.

For those looking to combine the Christmas Markets with the Ice Hotel check out the 4-night Ice Hotel Experience.

The Duration & The Calendar

The Transylvania Christmas Markets Experience takes place over three nights and four days and typically commences every Friday or Saturday with weekdays tipping the week of Christmas during the season. However, the arrival and departure times of your chosen flights may well affect the exact duration of your stay. Many use the flexibility of booking their own flights to add an additional night or two (or three) in Bucharest at the beginning and/or end of the experience to make the very most of their time in Romania.

The calendar on the BOOK NOW page shows exactly when trips are available throughout the season. As well as displaying which trip dates are fully booked or available, the calendar also highlights specific dates that have been discounted or are on special offer. Click here to see available dates and rates on our calendar.

The Highlights

There are lots of reasons why we think you would be mad not to miss this experience, but here are a few of our personal trip highlights to help persuade you…

Magical Christmas Markets: Not one but three Christmas markets full of Christmas cheer and each with their own highlights. Bucharest is teeming with multi-coloured lights and decorations, its market sits in the heart of the city allowing you to make the very most of it’s lively bar scene, so when you’ve finished your stroll by the market stalls and had your “vin fiert” (mulled wine) you wont have far to walk for to continue your evening. Brasov’s Christmas market is arguably the prettiest due to it’s beautiful square and huge glittering tree, the perfect Christmas fairy tale scene. Then finally there is the picturesque Sibiu’s Christmas market which is not only the biggest but also comes with its very own Ice skating rink!

Charming Transylvanian towns: Transylvania’s collection of medieval towns is one of its biggest highlights and once you’ve had the opportunity to stroll around their cobbled streets and soak up the old-worldly atmosphere you’ll soon see why. Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains and dotted with clusters of rural villages, fortified churches and thick forests, the old towns of Brasov and Sibiu are an absolute pleasure to spend time in. These medieval Saxon towns ooze charm, history and culture and will make you feel as though you’ve stepped into a long ago fairytale where ghosts and vampires are very much alive.

Buzzing Bucharest: Bucharest is a mismatch of styles and architectures that only add to its character. From communist buildings to belle époque architecture (which prompted the nickname of ‘Little Paris’ before the communist era), it is sure to keep you busy and entertained for hours. The old town is its beating heart where you’ll find quirky bars and bistros, cozy restaurants, a pinch of culture and a nightlife like no other. Pair that with a lively Christmas markets and festive concerts and you’ll never want to leave.
