Best Wildlife Adventures in Europe This Winter
The best wildlife in Europe is not hiding in summer. In winter, the forests are quiet and the animals are easier to follow. Better still, two of Europe’s most elusive animals are at their most active.
So, where should you go? Here are two small-group trips for winter, one in the sunny south of Spain and one in the snowy Carpathian Mountains.
Best Wildlife in Europe This Winter
1. Track the Iberian Lynx: Best Wildlife in Europe in Andalucía

The Iberian lynx is the world’s most endangered wild cat. It is aloof and normally hard to see. However, winter is the mating season, so the lynx are more active and sightings are higher.

Our Iberian Lynx Experience takes place in Sierra de Andújar National Park in Andalucía. Departures run weekly from early December to late January. A bilingual guide and wildlife expert leads every excursion, so you are in good hands.
Of course, wildlife is never guaranteed. Even so, the lynx mainly hunts wild rabbits, so it tends to focus on its prey rather than on you. As a result, patient watchers are often rewarded.

In Sierra de Andújar, the lynx is not the only star. Also, you may spot deer, otters, Spanish ibex and black vultures. Eagles, including the Spanish Imperial Eagle, patrol the skies above.

Furthermore, the trip combines wildlife with culture. You spend two nights in Seville and visit the famous Mezquita in Córdoba. In addition, optional extras include a tapas tour and a flamenco show.
2. Follow the Grey Wolf for the Best Wildlife in Europe

Grey wolves are even harder to spot, and that makes the search so thrilling. Our Grey Wolf Experience runs on Fridays from January to March. You travel in a tiny group of up to six people.

You base yourself in the old Saxon town of Brașov. Then you spend two nights in a warm wooden cabin with a fireplace, deep in the forest. Each day, your tracker leads you through the snow, and you return to the cabin for lunch and dinner by the fire.
Naturally, patience is essential, because wolves are shy. Meanwhile, you may also meet lynx, mountain roosters or brown bears. Waterproof clothing is a must, and tracking equipment is included.

Transylvania has its own supporting cast too. Besides wolves, the Carpathians shelter one of Europe’s largest populations of brown bears. You may also see lynx and mountain roosters. In addition, an optional visit to the Libearty Bear Sanctuary lets you meet more than 70 rescued bears.

Likewise, the trip is rich in culture. Brașov’s Old Town, with its Saxon heritage, is a joy to wander. Moreover, if your flight is late enough, you can visit Bran Castle, the hilltop fortress linked to the Dracula legend.
