Home to unspoiled beaches, crystal clear lakes, and towering mountains, Montenegro may be one of Europe’s smallest nations but this little Balkan country has a lot to offer. Read ahead to find out what highlights you shouldn’t miss out on when you next visit.

Durmitor National Park

Created by glaciers the Durmitor National Park is a place of extraordinary beauty. The massive national park spans 39,000 acres across north-western Montenegro, leading into Bosnia and Herzegovina, it’s home to glacier lakes, Europe’s largest canyon, and the tallest peak in Montenegro. Drive-up the snaking road to Sedlo Viewpoint to truly appreciate the beauty of this place.

Tara Canyon

A clear answer for the adrenaline seekers. The turquoise waters of the Tara River flow freely through the narrow canyon, being the perfect opportunity for an adrenaline-pumping White Water Rafting Experience. While this is easily the best way to witness the spectacular views of one of the deepest canyons in the world, those who are less adventure-inclined can still take in the views from a safe distance. The iconic Tara Bridge spans the entire length of the canyon, an impressive feat of architecture. Initially built in 1940, it has been blown up a year later to protect the soldiers and civilians during World War II. Luckily for us, it was rebuilt after the war, offering a bird’s eye view over the snaking Tara Canyon.

Sveti Stefan

Formerly a fishing village, the whitewashed stone villas are surrounded by dazzling turquoise waters that used to be a playground for celebrities back in the 1960s-80s. Now, this little islet is home to a five-star luxury resort that prides itself on offering guests a truly unique experience. Only paying guests can enter the island, but a reservation at the on-site Nobu restaurant is a good way to get a look in. 

Kotor Old Town

Rich in history and full of amazing architecture it’s no surprise that Kotor old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Climb Kotor’s old walls to be rewarded with the most spectacular views of Kotor and out into the bay. At night time, the walls are lit and can be seen from either in the town or from across the water in neighbouring Muo.

Our Lady of the Rocks Church

Situated across the sea from Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks is one of Montenegro’s top attractions. The island is home to a small church and museum that has had very little interference from the modern world, it almost feels like you’re stepping back in time! The local seamen built the artificial island over the course of two centuries, rock by rock. Finalized in 1722, the church is an architectural and artistic marvel, with over 60 paintings and the intricate embroidery tapestry of the Holy Mary. As a bonus, against the mountain backdrop, the church makes for a picture-perfect view from the Perast shores.
