Things to do in Bled Slovenia

Things To Do in Bled, Slovenia

Bled is a small town in north-west Slovenia that until recently has remained relatively untouched by modern tourism. However, as more and more people discover the natural beauty of the country, the town has increased in popularity, so that there is more accommodation and accessibility for visitors. Whether you’re planning on staying there for a few days or just visiting for the day, there is plenty to do in this hidden gem of Slovenia. Read on to discover just a handful of activities awaiting you in Bled.

Lake Bled

First and foremost is visiting the lake, the focal point and beating heart of the town. The majority of the visitors travel to Bled to visit the magnificent lake and gaze out to the centre island. Trips are also offered to the centre island, home to the pilgrimage church, along with a couple of other buildings. When travelling across the lake to the island, you’ll likely be taken in a pletna; a wooden boat propelled with two oars, which is a truly magical experience like you have travelled back in time. Leading up to the church, there is a staircase of 99 steps, designed in a beautiful Baroque style.

Not only can you visit the centre island, but you can also walk or cycle around the outside of the lake. The route is roughly 6km long and can be the perfect activity for any time of year.

Bled Castle

Standing sentinel above the town of Bled, the castle is a medieval structure built on a hill above the lake. The building was constructed in the 11th century and is now used as a tourist attraction, being one of the most popular in the country. In the castle, there is a museum located within the Baroque rooms, which displays artefacts from the castle’s history. There is also a gothic chapel that was later built in the 16th century. The castle also houses a restaurant that employs a team of highly trained chefs to deliver visitors a range of traditional and contemporary Slovenian dishes.

Triglav National Park

Bled is located just a few kilometres from the outskirts of Triglav National Park. Triglav is a massive area covering 880 square kilometres, and within this, there are seemingly unlimited hiking routes, with trails that suit all abilities. Bled is located on the eastern part of the park, closeby to the Mezakla mountain peak or Soteska Vintgar, a stunning waterfall gorge that can be accessed using a network of bridges and trails. Parking is possible in front of the gorge for a fee of €5 along with an entrance fee of €10 to enter the area.

Adventure Sports

If you’re looking to get the adrenaline pumping, then why not head out and take part in some adventure sports? Various companies in the area offer a range of sessions; these could include:
– Bike trips around Vintgar Gorge, cycling around the wooden trails and bridges to experience the area at your own pace.
– Kayaking can be done either on Lake Bled, or for those more adventurous, take a guided tour into Slovenia’s Black Hole tunnels with only a headlight to guide your way. Not one for the faint-hearted!
– Cycle around Bled and the lake. Bike hire is available in the town, and you can choose where and when you cycle to really get to know the town.
– Canyoning is also available through various companies in the town. This involves climbing, jumping and scrambling through various gorges and pools, along with abseiling down the rocks.

Experience Slovenian Cuisine

Slovenia has a wealth of traditional dishes that have either been handed down from generations of locals, or influenced by similar dishes from neighbouring countries. Soups are particularly popular as a starter with a range of meat and vegetable combinations. For mains, meat dishes are particularly popular such as chicken and beef served with an array of fresh vegetables and potatoes. For dessert, we’d suggest trying the Slovenian speciality of Cremeschnitte, a cream and custard cake served between a base and topping of puff pastry.
