Best Sunsets in Europe: The Untravelled Version

There are few things more romantic and picturesque to admire during your time away than a golden glowing sunset as the sun drops behind the horizon and ignites the sky with pink and golden flares. Europe is home to some of the most spectacular sunsets, with countries such as Spain, Italy and Iceland all providing famous, picture-perfect scenes. However, here at Untravelled Paths, we like to do things just a little differently; therefore, we have put together a list of some of the best sunsets in Europe that can be found in lesser travelled countries.

The Sahara Desert, Morocco

Sahara Desert Sunset

Although Morocco may not geographically be part of Europe, it’s neighbouring connections, and exquisite sunsets have afforded it a place on our list. The largest hot desert in the world, the Sahara is something of unimaginable size and scale. Totalling 3.5 million square miles and covering much of the northern third of the African continent, the desert offers some spectacular views of a dipping sun. With the sky slowly fading from a brilliant blue to a pastel pink complemented by a yellow tinge, it’s hard to think of anywhere you would rather be.

Kasbah Bab Ourika, Morocco

Located an hour from the city of Marrakech, Kasbah Bab Ourika is a 5-star hotel perched in the Atlas Mountains. With views of both lush green landscapes and snow-capped mountains in the background, the Kasbah offers visitors a chance to relax and recharge while gazing upon some of the finest scenery in Morocco. When the sun begins to set, you will be treated to an unbelievable display of colour as the sun reflects off of the snowy peaks.

Tivat, Montenegro

Sunset at Tivat Harbour Montenegro

With a modest population of roughly 14,000, the town of Tivat sits at the water’s edge in the Bay of Kotor. Because of the mountainous nature of the bay, direct views of sunsets can be difficult to achieve; however, Tivat is one of the few places to offer them. There are two places in the town that provide sunset views, either Porto Montenegro, the local harbour, or Lido Yacht Club. Both of these locations make use of the parting mountains in the distance, which allow for an almost perfect sunset.

Danube Delta, Romania

Sunset over the Danube Delta in Romania

Found in eastern Romania, the Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe and will offer some amazing sights, both during the day and as the sun begins to set. Wildlife and vegetation notoriously flourish within river deltas; therefore it is not surprising that a wide selection of plants and animals have made the Delta their home. Additionally, the mostly flat surroundings allow for terrific sunrises and sunsets. Depending on where you are on the Delta, you’ll either be treated to dramatic silhouettes of the surrounding land or an uninterrupted sunset and the sun sinks into the water.

Piran, Slovenia

Slovenia is a country which offers many things, but an extensive coastline is not one of them. Fortunately, the petite 43km it has been blessed with has been turned into something of a paradise, for both visitors and locals to enjoy. The city of Piran is the westernmost part of the coastline as it stretches delicately out into the Gulf of Trieste. Here you’ll find calm waters lapping at the rocks and cafes aplenty to enjoy the uninterrupted views of the sunset. As the sun drops behind the horizon, it lights the calm waters of the Gulf and casts dramatic silhouettes across the city.

Transylvania, Romania

Although it can help to create a picturesque and dramatic setting, the presence of water is not completely necessary for a great sunset, as the central region of Transylvania has many to offer. One of the most iconic regions of the country, it is home to numerous rural towns and villages that sit within the mountains. These locations offer unbelievable vantage points from which to view a sunset, casting shadows over the neighbouring towns and villages before swallowing the region into darkness. You’ll also likely hear the music of the cowbells as the herds independently return home to their owners, walking through the village.
